Hadhramaut, formerly part of the Eastern Aden Protectorate, is now the largest of the seventeen provinces of the Republic of Yemen. It remains one of the most underdeveloped regions of the world and greatly in need of help.
The idea of forming ‘Friends of Hadhramaut’ came as a result of a visit to the area by Sultana al-Qu’aiti MBE and Brian Fyfield-Shayler BEM, as part of an expedition organised in 1996 by Jim Ellis OBE, who became our second Patron.
The trust is registered with the Charity Commissioners of England and Wales. Though based in the United Kingdom it has been an international effort from the start, drawing on the goodwill of over 600 well-wishers around the world. Our work is purely humanitarian and strictly non-political.
The trust promotes philanthropic, educational and medical links between the people of Hadhramaut and overseas, bringing their needs to the attention of those who may be in the best position to help. We aim to raise living standards, individually and collectively, relieving poverty wherever we can.
We favour community-based projects and self-help developments, as far as possible using local resources and indigenous materials. We are helping widows, autistic children and persons with disabilities. We support hospitals and clinics with equipment and medical aid throughout the length and breadth of the province – including al-Qatn, Shibam, Seiyun, Tarim, Mukallah, Shihr, Shiheir, Ghail Ba Wazir, Dis al-Sharqiyyah, Qusair, Hami, Raydah, al-Ghurfah, Wadi Masila and al-Hawrah. We have built new lavatories for girls and boys and renovated existing ones, as well as constructing over 50 brand-new classrooms in schools in remote areas, along the coast and on the jol. We are particularly focused on providing facilities for girls’ education.
New ‘Friends’ are asked to send £25 / €30 which will place you on the mailing list (for newsletters) and in our ‘Directory of Friends’. Additional donations of any size will, of course, be very welcome and will be acknowledged. Overseas subscriptions and donations should be by banker’s draft payable in sterling in the UK.
